Installing 05-09 Mustang Turn Signal Bulbs & Lenses

In this edition of writeups, we go over the installation process of adding front turn signals to your 2005-2009 Mustang. Installation can be done without even lifting the car in the air.

  • Tools Required:
    Phillips Screwdriver

If you begin with the driver’s side, you’ll want to turn the wheel all the way over to the passenger side to gain access to the screws holding the inner fenderwell on. Remove them using a phillips head screwdriver along with the one push pin.

Once all three screws are removed, you can peel back the inner fenderwell and gain access to the turn signal lens behind the bumper cover. Now you’ll work on removing the stock turn signal lens. There are two white pins holding the turn signal to the bumper cover. Squeeze one pin at a time and gently pull the lens away to release it from the bumper.

Now, you’ll want to remove the stock bulbs from the turn signal lens before completely removing it from the vehicle. There are two separate bulbs in the lens. (3157 and 194 bulb) Grasp each bulb and turn it counter-clockwise to free it from the housing. The lens should be free now. Remove it from underneath the bumper. It helps to have an extra set of hands here

We are now ready to re-install the new turn signal lens. You first want to find the tab behind the bumper cover. This will help you guide the new turn signal lens into place. The tab is shown below.

Slide the new lens in through the opening in the fenderwell. Align the tab on the new lens with the slot on the bumper cover as shown below.

Secure the other end of the lens with the white pins as shown below.

One of the last steps is to install the new 3157 and 194 Chrome-Amber Bulbs. Using latex gloves, remove the stock bulbs and re-install the chrome amber ones. Then place them in the housing and turn them clock wise to secure them in the new lens. It is important to not touch the glass portion of the bulb with your exposed fingers. The oils from your skin can prematurely wear out the bulb. Once your bulbs are in, turn on your turn signals to ensure they work.

Finally, re-install the inner fenderwell screws to complete your installation. Now you can enjoy the clear look while staying DOT legal. The different turn signal lens and bulb packages can be found on our site here: http://www.stangmods.com/Mustang-Clear-Turn-Signal-Lenses-Side-Markers-s/157.htm

Installing HID Foglights in 2005-2009 Mustang GTs

In this writeup we go over the installation process of an HID Foglight kit on the 2005-2009 Mustang GTs.

Tools Required:

  • 10 MM Socket
  • Flat Head Screwdriver

Use a flat head screw driver to remove the (6) push pins from the radiator shroud cover as shown below.

Once the cover is removed, there are two 10MM bolts that need to be removed. The passenger side bolt is pointed out below.

Work with one side at a time. Once the bolt is removed, pull the bumper up over the notch as pointed out below. This will allow you to pull the bumper/grille assembly outward and eventually off the vehicle.

As you pull the bumper over the notch, grasp the grille and pull it outward. There are two black tabs that must be released from the bumper. The tabs are pointed out in the pictures below. Once you have one side freed from the bumper, move to the other side and repeat. The grille should now be free.

Once the grille is removed and you have access, grasp the bulb and turn it counter-clockwise to release it from its housing.

Now that the bulb is freed from the housing, you’ll want to remove it from the stock harness. Use your thumb as shown below to press the tab and release the bulb.

Now you can go ahead and install the new HID bulb by turning it in clockwise. You can also mount your ballast. There is more than enough space to position it behind the headlamp bulb and then pass the wires over to the foglamp.

Next, we’ll connect the power from the HID bulb to the stock foglight harness. You’ll notice two thin wires going into the passenger side harness. There is a black and red wire as shown below.

Take the red wire coming off the HID bulb and plug it into the stock foglight harness where the red wire is coming through on the other side. Take the black wire coming off the HID bulb and plug it into the other slot where the black wire is coming through on the other side.

The final step is to connect the three plug in connections from the ballast to the bulbs. Now test to make sure the passenger side HID bulb is working. Turn the key to the on position and test the foglamp.

Now, we’ll repeat the same process for the driver’s side foglamp. The only difference is in the wire colors on the stock harness.

As shown in the picture below, the driver’s side harness contains a blue and black wire instead of red and black. The blue wire is the power so connect the red wire from the HID bulb to the slot where the blue wire is going in on the other side. Plug the black wire from the HID bulb into the other slot on the stock harness.

Now you can mount your ballast and pass the wires over to the foglamp area.

Finish the installation by making the three plug in connections.

Re attach the grille to the bumper by lining up the tabs and pressing the grille in place. Re-install the two 10MM bolts. Finally, re-install the radiator shroud cover with the 6 push pins and this will complete the installation process.

It is important to note that we have the HID headlight kit installed also. Mounting all four ballasts and hiding the wiring was extremely simple. After completing our installation, it is almost unnoticeable that we even have an aftermarket HID system installed. Whats great is that for less than the cost of a factory upgrade, you can install both the Bixenon HID headlight and foglight kit and get exceptional lighting and stunning good looks.

Installing StangMods Bixenon HIDs in 05-09 Ford Mustangs

In this edition of writeups we go over the process of installing a Bixenon HID kit on a 2009 Mustang GT. This very popular modification was easy to install and required only a 10MM socket.

Tools Required:

  • 10MM Socket
  • Socket Extension

First take the wiring harness and position it on the passenger side near the fuse box cover. A majority of the connections will be made in this location.

Run the longer side of the harness over to the driver’s side of the vehicle. It is not important to tuck it away at this point.

Go back to the wires laid out on the passenger side. You’ll see two O ring terminals. You may have to push back the wire cover but you’ll see one is red and the other is black.

Using a 10MM socket, remove the bolt located on the inner fender. This is the location where you’ll connect the black ground wire with O ring terminal. Slip the O ring over the bolt as shown below and re-install the bolt.

Remove the cover on the fuse box located under the hood. There is a 10MM bolt circled in red below. Attach the red power wire with O ring terminal to this bolt. This is your power source.

The picture below shows our red O ring terminal power wire attached.

Next, you’ll want to remove the stock passenger side bulb. Simply turn the bulb counter-clockwise and it will come undone from the headlamp housing. Once you have the bulb removed, you’ll need to disconnect it from the stock harness. Use your thumb and press in the tab as shown below. While pressing the tab, gently pull the bulb away from the harness.

Take your new HID bulb and install it in the headlamp housing by turning it in clockwise.

Now, we’ll be connecting the H13 headlight plug from the HID harness to the stock passenger side harness as shown below. Simply plug the two connections in.

One of the last few steps for the passenger side is mounting your ballast. The picture below shows where we placed ours. There is more than enough space to drop in the ballast. Do not zip-tie it or bolt it in place just yet. The StangMods kit comes with both zip ties and brackets with hardware to mount your ballasts.

To finish up the installation on the passenger side, there are three plug-in connections that need to be made. Each of these connections are polarized; meaning they can only be plugged into each other one specific way. The first connection is from the bulb to the harness as shown below.

The next is the two separate plugs from the bulb to the ballast.

Finally, there is one remaining square plug from the HID harness. Connect it to the ballast as shown below.

Before buttoning everything up, check to make sure your passenger side HID bulb comes on and works.

After confirming the passenger side works, you can zip-tie all of the connections in place. Once everything is tucked away, it’ll be hard to notice the HID wiring.

Now we’ll begin on the driver side. We routed the harness over to the driver’s side following an OEM harness as pointed out in the picture below. Run the harness from HID underneath the radiator shroud cover.

To give us more space with the driver’s side headlamp area, remove the bolt holding the intake cover in place (use 10 MM socket and extension). You do not have to undo the intake completely. Simply remove the bolt and move the intake out of the way.

Remove the stock driver’s side bulb the same way you did the passenger side bulb. Undo the bulb from the harness and zip-tie the stock harness out of the way. It will not be used. You can now install the new HID bulb.

Now place the ballast in the location as shown below. There is just enough space for the ballast to fit in snugly. You can zip tie it to the large harness to keep it in place.

Next you’ll connect the driver’s side ground to the bolt on the inner fenderwell as shown below.

Finish up the process by making the same three plug-in connections that you made on the passenger side. Reinstall the stock intake and zip-tie any loose connections out of the way. This completes the full installation of your new HID kit.

Installing Chrome/Amber Bulbs In 1999-2004 Mustangs

In this write up, we go over the installation process of the chrome/amber turn signal bulbs. Installation is very simple and no tools are required. These bulbs complement clear corner headlamps and turn signals very well. We installed the bulbs in our smoked clear corner headlamps for the 99-04 Mustang. The bulb will fit any application using a 3157 bulb type.

Tools Required:

  • None

First remove the two headlamp pins that secure the headlamp to the vehicle. Simply place your finger under the tab as shown below and pull up. There are two pins per headlamp. These are the only items securing the headlamp to the vehicle.

Once the pins are removed, gently slide the headlamps away from the body of the vehicle. It may take some effort, but eventually they will work free. Once you have some space, unplug the wiring harness from the headlamp bulb. Simply pull up on the tabs and gently release the harness.

Next, remove the wiring harness connected to the turn signal bulb. Depress the sides of the harness and gently pull it off the turn signal bulb. The picture below shows the harness removed from the bulb.

Turn the bulb counter clock-wise to remove it from the headlamp. The picture below shows the bulb partially removed from the housing.

The picture below shows the stock turn signal bulb located in its base. Gently pull the bulb out of the base to prepare for re-installation of the new turn signal bulb.

Take the new chrome/amber bulb and re-install it in the adapter. Be careful not to touch the bulb with your bare hands or fingertips. The new chrome/amber bulb installed is shown below.

Finally, reverse steps one through four and your installation is complete.

Installing Clear Or Smoked Rear Side Markers & LED Bulbs In 05-09 Mustangs

In this write-up we add a set of clear rear side markers and red led bulbs to our 2009 Mustang GT. Installation is very simple and takes virtually minutes to do. You can find our rear side marker/LED package here – http://www.stangmods.com/Mustang-Rear-Side-Marker-Lenses-Red-LED-Bulbs-p/00980.htm

Tools Required:

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Terry Cloth or Towel

The first step is removing the stock side marker. This is done by wrapping the end of a flat head screwdriver with a towel. Insert the end into the small gap where the sidemarker meets the body of the car and gently pull outward.

The sidemarker will be attached to the wiring harness from the vehicle. Depress the tab shown in the picture below and release the harness from the lens.

Now, remove the stock bulb housing from the lens by turning it counter clockwise. This is what you’ll be left with after removing the housing with bulb inside.

Now its time to get the clear lens and LED bulb ready for installation. Simply pull the stock halogen bulb out of its base and insert the new LED bulb. It’s important to note that the LED bulb will fit in the bulb housing two different ways, but only one way is correct. After installing the LED bulb in the small black housing, plug it into the sidemarker wiring harness. Use your key fob and unlock your doors. This will cause the LED bulb to come on. If it does not light up, then flip the position of the LED in the bulb housing.

Once you’ve done this, remove the bulb housing from the wiring harness and re-install it into the new clear side marker as shown below.

We’re almost done at this point. Take your new sidemarker with LED bulb installed and plug the sidemarker wiring harness back in.

The clear lens has an OEM fit. Simply push the lens back into place and you should hear/feel it snap in. It does not require much force to get it on so don’t force things!

Your installation is now complete!

Installing StangMods HID Foglight Conversion On 2010-2012 Mustang GTs

In this write-up, we go over the process of installing StangMods’ HID foglight kit in your 2010-2011 Mustang GT. We’ve gone over the write up for the headlight kit which can be found HERE.

The fog kit needs no wiring harness and uses the factory wiring harness plugs to get power to the ballasts. As you can see with the grill installed there is very little space behind the grill. It’s not possible to do this install without removing the grill. Removing the grill is the most difficult part of installing this HID kit. You have to remove two bolts that hold the grill on and then pop the grill loose from the retailing tabs all around the grill. Take care to not scratch your paint during the removal process.

Once the grill is removed, you can access the bulbs easily. You need to twist and remove the factory bulbs from the housing of the fogs and then install the HID bulbs into the housing by pressing them into the opening and twisting to lock. The HID bulbs again have a black and red wire coming off for connecting to the ballast.

Once you have the bulbs installed, you are ready to install the ballasts for your fog lights and connect the wires. The factory connector to the fog light plug connects to one of the connectors running off the ballast. This is the only confusing part of the install. The factory harness for each of the fogs has two different colored wires. On each side, the power wire is different color than the ground wire is. You have to be sure that the ground wire of the factory plug is aligned with the side of the HID harness that has the black ground wire. In my case, the ground wire was a grayish color with a yellow stripe. If you hook this backwards, the HID fog lights will not work. Be sure you test the fogs to ensure they work before you reinstall the grill.

The installation for both the right and left fog lights is the exact same. All of the connectors except the one where the factory fog light harness plugs in that I just mentioned are keyed. The other wiring connections can’t be installed wrong. Once you get the ballasts hooked up and the fogs work you can route the wires and reinstall the grill. I pushed the wires though a small opening between the radiator and the headlight assembly rather than wire the ballasts inside the radiator area. You can put the ballasts wherever the will safely fit and be secure.

After installing the wires, reinstalling the grill, and securing the ballast you are ready to reconnect the battery, put the radiator cover back on and you are done. The lights look really good and have lots more light than the factory halogen bulbs. Keep in mind when you look at the before and after photos below that my headlights and fogs are blackout tinted.
