Installing Vinyl Mustang Bumper Inserts on 99-04 Mustangs

Installing Mustang vinyl bumper inserts is probably one of the simplest modifications that can be done to your 99-04 Mustang. We go over the rather quick process in this installation write-up.

Tools Required:

  • Spray Bottle
  • A couple of drops of liquid soap
  • Q Tip
  • Hair dryer or heat gun (optional)

You first want to make sure the letter area on your rear bumper is completely clean and dry. This is absolutely important to ensure the letters adhere to the bumper properly. After this is done, you’ll want to mix a warm water and liquid soap solution and put it in a spray bottle. Any liquid soap will work.

Next, take your water/soap solution and spray down the letter area on your rear bumper. It is better to work with one letter at a time. Here we are starting with the M.

Once the area is wet, take the vinyl bumper letter and peel off the thicker paper backing as shown below.

Now, line up the vinyl letter with the indentation on the bumper. Take your time and be patient as you want to make sure the letters are lined up correctly.

Once the letter is lined up with the indentation in the bumper, take your q-tip and begin smoothing out the letter onto the bumper.  Work from the center towards the sides. Try to get as much as the liquid solution out from the letter.

It is important to note that if you are working in temperatures below 60 degrees, you may want to use a hair dryer or heat gun to help warm up the vinyl. This makes it easier to adhere to the bumper.

Once the letter is firmly in place, you can peel off the transfer tape. Start peeling the paper away slowly. If the vinyl letter stays in place on the bumper then you can remove the rest of the transfer tape.

Repeat the above process for the rest of the letters. Take your time with the “G” as it is more difficult to line up correctly. After your done, you’ll be left with this:

Installing Reverse Glow Gauges in 99-04 Ford Mustangs

The white face reverse glow gauges are a popular item for 94-09 Mustangs. Follow along as we install a set courtesy of Stack Racing.

Tools Required:

  • T15 Torx Head and Driver
  • Drill and metal bit
  • Soldering gun or Quick Splice Connectors
  • Thin Allen Wrench or Paper Clip

First you’ll want to disconnect your battery by removing the negative terminal first and then the positive side. It is a good idea to disconnect your battery whenever you are working on your Mustang’s electronics. Wait 15 minutes after disconnecting your battery before you being the install.

Remove the headlight knob to the left of the steering wheel. Pull the knob out in the “lights on” position and rotate the knob counter-clockwise until the slit is facing towards the driver’s side door. Inside the slit is a metal clip. Using a thin object (allen wrench works great), release the clip by gently lifting the clip outward towards the driver’s side door. While you do this, pull firmly on the headlight knob. This should release the knob and it should slide right off.

Now, remove the two screws holding the dash panel to the dash with the T15 torx bit and driver. Once removed, the entire panel can be taken out by firmly pulling straight out. This will release the clips and pins which also secure it in place. The torx screws are shown circled in red below.

We will be removing the gauge cluster from the dash. Begin by removing the (4) T15 torx screws which secure the cluster to the dash. Once you remove the screws, gently pull the cluster away but do not completely remove. There are two electrical plugs that need to be disconnected before you can remove the gauge cluster from the vehicle. The torx screws which need to be removed are circled in red below.

The two connectors which need to be unplugged are shown circled in red below.

Using the T15 torx bit and driver, remove the (8) Torx screws holding the clear lens onto the gauge cluster. Once all are removed, gently remove the clear lens.

Now we will begin installing the new white face gauges. The great thing about our design is you do not need to remove your needles for installation! Start with the fuel and temperature gauge section and slip the insert over the existing gauges as shown below. You can then move onto the other sections. Take your time and be careful with the needles so that they are not accidently broken.

Once the new white face gauges are in place, reassemble the gauge cluster unit by reinstalling the clear lens and replacing the (8) torx screws which held it on. Finally, the hard part is over! Next, we’ll be wiring up your new white face gauges.

We will be wiring the gauges to the headlight control unit. First, remove the headlight control unit by removing the two metric hex bolts shown circled below. Once removed, gently slide the unit out. The harness attached to the headlight control unit is shown below. You want to connect the red (positive) wire coming from the invertor included with your new gauges to the large gray wire that is located on the headlight control unit harness. Attach the black wire coming from the invertor to any good ground source. You can choose to drill a small hole in the chassis and attach the ground wire with an O ring terminal or you can tap into the black wire located on the headlight control unit harness (simplest way).

We are almost done at this point. Attach the clips coming from your new gauges to the clips on the new gauge harness. There maybe some extras but its not a big deal. This is a good time to test your electrical connections. You will need to plug the harnesses going into the gauge cluster back in and then reattach the positive and negative connections on your battery. Turn your lights on and hopefully your new white face gauges come to life!

Once everything checks out, you’ll finish the install by reversing the initial steps gone over at the beginning of this guide. Thats all there is to it! In under an hour, you can totally transform the cockpit of your Mustang.

How To Install Map Light/Dome Bulbs in 2005-2012 Mustangs

This installment of writeups goes over the installation of LED dome light bulbs on the 2005-2009 Mustangs.

Tools Required:

  • None

You first want to remove the cover to access the dome bulbs. Simply grasp the cover firmly and pull down.

Next, use your thumb or a thin point and depress the tab holding the harness to the grey connector. Once you release the tab, gently pull the dome bulb cover away.

Installing 05-09 Mustang Turn Signal Bulbs & Lenses

In this edition of writeups, we go over the installation process of adding front turn signals to your 2005-2009 Mustang. Installation can be done without even lifting the car in the air.

  • Tools Required:
    Phillips Screwdriver

If you begin with the driver’s side, you’ll want to turn the wheel all the way over to the passenger side to gain access to the screws holding the inner fenderwell on. Remove them using a phillips head screwdriver along with the one push pin.

Once all three screws are removed, you can peel back the inner fenderwell and gain access to the turn signal lens behind the bumper cover. Now you’ll work on removing the stock turn signal lens. There are two white pins holding the turn signal to the bumper cover. Squeeze one pin at a time and gently pull the lens away to release it from the bumper.

Now, you’ll want to remove the stock bulbs from the turn signal lens before completely removing it from the vehicle. There are two separate bulbs in the lens. (3157 and 194 bulb) Grasp each bulb and turn it counter-clockwise to free it from the housing. The lens should be free now. Remove it from underneath the bumper. It helps to have an extra set of hands here

We are now ready to re-install the new turn signal lens. You first want to find the tab behind the bumper cover. This will help you guide the new turn signal lens into place. The tab is shown below.

Slide the new lens in through the opening in the fenderwell. Align the tab on the new lens with the slot on the bumper cover as shown below.

Secure the other end of the lens with the white pins as shown below.

One of the last steps is to install the new 3157 and 194 Chrome-Amber Bulbs. Using latex gloves, remove the stock bulbs and re-install the chrome amber ones. Then place them in the housing and turn them clock wise to secure them in the new lens. It is important to not touch the glass portion of the bulb with your exposed fingers. The oils from your skin can prematurely wear out the bulb. Once your bulbs are in, turn on your turn signals to ensure they work.

Finally, re-install the inner fenderwell screws to complete your installation. Now you can enjoy the clear look while staying DOT legal. The different turn signal lens and bulb packages can be found on our site here: http://www.stangmods.com/Mustang-Clear-Turn-Signal-Lenses-Side-Markers-s/157.htm

Installing HID Foglights in 2005-2009 Mustang GTs

In this writeup we go over the installation process of an HID Foglight kit on the 2005-2009 Mustang GTs.

Tools Required:

  • 10 MM Socket
  • Flat Head Screwdriver

Use a flat head screw driver to remove the (6) push pins from the radiator shroud cover as shown below.

Once the cover is removed, there are two 10MM bolts that need to be removed. The passenger side bolt is pointed out below.

Work with one side at a time. Once the bolt is removed, pull the bumper up over the notch as pointed out below. This will allow you to pull the bumper/grille assembly outward and eventually off the vehicle.

As you pull the bumper over the notch, grasp the grille and pull it outward. There are two black tabs that must be released from the bumper. The tabs are pointed out in the pictures below. Once you have one side freed from the bumper, move to the other side and repeat. The grille should now be free.

Once the grille is removed and you have access, grasp the bulb and turn it counter-clockwise to release it from its housing.

Now that the bulb is freed from the housing, you’ll want to remove it from the stock harness. Use your thumb as shown below to press the tab and release the bulb.

Now you can go ahead and install the new HID bulb by turning it in clockwise. You can also mount your ballast. There is more than enough space to position it behind the headlamp bulb and then pass the wires over to the foglamp.

Next, we’ll connect the power from the HID bulb to the stock foglight harness. You’ll notice two thin wires going into the passenger side harness. There is a black and red wire as shown below.

Take the red wire coming off the HID bulb and plug it into the stock foglight harness where the red wire is coming through on the other side. Take the black wire coming off the HID bulb and plug it into the other slot where the black wire is coming through on the other side.

The final step is to connect the three plug in connections from the ballast to the bulbs. Now test to make sure the passenger side HID bulb is working. Turn the key to the on position and test the foglamp.

Now, we’ll repeat the same process for the driver’s side foglamp. The only difference is in the wire colors on the stock harness.

As shown in the picture below, the driver’s side harness contains a blue and black wire instead of red and black. The blue wire is the power so connect the red wire from the HID bulb to the slot where the blue wire is going in on the other side. Plug the black wire from the HID bulb into the other slot on the stock harness.

Now you can mount your ballast and pass the wires over to the foglamp area.

Finish the installation by making the three plug in connections.

Re attach the grille to the bumper by lining up the tabs and pressing the grille in place. Re-install the two 10MM bolts. Finally, re-install the radiator shroud cover with the 6 push pins and this will complete the installation process.

It is important to note that we have the HID headlight kit installed also. Mounting all four ballasts and hiding the wiring was extremely simple. After completing our installation, it is almost unnoticeable that we even have an aftermarket HID system installed. Whats great is that for less than the cost of a factory upgrade, you can install both the Bixenon HID headlight and foglight kit and get exceptional lighting and stunning good looks.

Installing StangMods Bixenon HIDs in 05-09 Ford Mustangs

In this edition of writeups we go over the process of installing a Bixenon HID kit on a 2009 Mustang GT. This very popular modification was easy to install and required only a 10MM socket.

Tools Required:

  • 10MM Socket
  • Socket Extension

First take the wiring harness and position it on the passenger side near the fuse box cover. A majority of the connections will be made in this location.

Run the longer side of the harness over to the driver’s side of the vehicle. It is not important to tuck it away at this point.

Go back to the wires laid out on the passenger side. You’ll see two O ring terminals. You may have to push back the wire cover but you’ll see one is red and the other is black.

Using a 10MM socket, remove the bolt located on the inner fender. This is the location where you’ll connect the black ground wire with O ring terminal. Slip the O ring over the bolt as shown below and re-install the bolt.

Remove the cover on the fuse box located under the hood. There is a 10MM bolt circled in red below. Attach the red power wire with O ring terminal to this bolt. This is your power source.

The picture below shows our red O ring terminal power wire attached.

Next, you’ll want to remove the stock passenger side bulb. Simply turn the bulb counter-clockwise and it will come undone from the headlamp housing. Once you have the bulb removed, you’ll need to disconnect it from the stock harness. Use your thumb and press in the tab as shown below. While pressing the tab, gently pull the bulb away from the harness.

Take your new HID bulb and install it in the headlamp housing by turning it in clockwise.

Now, we’ll be connecting the H13 headlight plug from the HID harness to the stock passenger side harness as shown below. Simply plug the two connections in.

One of the last few steps for the passenger side is mounting your ballast. The picture below shows where we placed ours. There is more than enough space to drop in the ballast. Do not zip-tie it or bolt it in place just yet. The StangMods kit comes with both zip ties and brackets with hardware to mount your ballasts.

To finish up the installation on the passenger side, there are three plug-in connections that need to be made. Each of these connections are polarized; meaning they can only be plugged into each other one specific way. The first connection is from the bulb to the harness as shown below.

The next is the two separate plugs from the bulb to the ballast.

Finally, there is one remaining square plug from the HID harness. Connect it to the ballast as shown below.

Before buttoning everything up, check to make sure your passenger side HID bulb comes on and works.

After confirming the passenger side works, you can zip-tie all of the connections in place. Once everything is tucked away, it’ll be hard to notice the HID wiring.

Now we’ll begin on the driver side. We routed the harness over to the driver’s side following an OEM harness as pointed out in the picture below. Run the harness from HID underneath the radiator shroud cover.

To give us more space with the driver’s side headlamp area, remove the bolt holding the intake cover in place (use 10 MM socket and extension). You do not have to undo the intake completely. Simply remove the bolt and move the intake out of the way.

Remove the stock driver’s side bulb the same way you did the passenger side bulb. Undo the bulb from the harness and zip-tie the stock harness out of the way. It will not be used. You can now install the new HID bulb.

Now place the ballast in the location as shown below. There is just enough space for the ballast to fit in snugly. You can zip tie it to the large harness to keep it in place.

Next you’ll connect the driver’s side ground to the bolt on the inner fenderwell as shown below.

Finish up the process by making the same three plug-in connections that you made on the passenger side. Reinstall the stock intake and zip-tie any loose connections out of the way. This completes the full installation of your new HID kit.
