How To Install MRT Hood Struts On 2010 & Up Ford Mustangs

MRT’s hood struts are one of the most useful mods you can do to your Ford Mustang. The stock prop rod is cheap & flimsy & doesn’t belong on a car like the Mustang. Many new luxury & performance cars come with hood strut systems from the factory, this simple mod will make opening your hood easier and quicker, a useful tool for those who work on their Mustangs on a regular basis. You can find this black MRT Hood Strut Kit on StangMods by clicking the following link: MRT Black Hood Strut Kit

For this install you will need a couple of tools. They are:  a 10mm socket wrench, razor cutter or scissors, flat head screwdriver, extra set of hands to help support the hood when adding the strut brackets.

Start by locating the fender bolt closest to the hood of the car, remove this 10mm bolt, place the lower bracket there & tighten it down. The RH side is the passenger side, LH is the drivers side. Each bracket in the kit is engraved with either RH or LH.

After the lower brackets are in place it’s time to install the upper brackets. You may want to grab a friend to help with this step. Remove the upper 10mm bolt and LOOSTEN the lower one just enough to slide the braket under the head of the lower bolt. Reinstall the upper bolt once the lower part of the bracket is fastened by the lower bolt.

Once the brackets on both sides of the hood/vehicle are installed and tightened, install the struts! You can now ditch the prop rod for good, you can even unbolt it’s bracket & throw it in the trash, up to you!

The steps above complete the install process on 05-09 Mustangs. If you have a 2010 and newer model you’ll need to modify the sound tube located on the driver’s side. This is required to give the hood strut clearance.

Start by removing the lower rubber bushing under the plastic bracket. There is a small metal guide for the bolt pressed through this bushing, you can remove it with a flathead screwdriver Do not throw this away as it will be reused. Once the rubber bracket has been removed, cut about half an inch out of the center of the rubber bushing as marked by the red lines in the photo below.

After you’ve cut the bushing install everything backwards like shown below. The U clip that the bolt originally threaded into must be installed on the bottom of all of this.

Once everything is lined up, bolt it down like shown below. All done!

Now you have an attractive, useful mod that’ll give you more clearance while providing a nice visual upgrade . For more information on MRT’s Hood Strut Kits, follow this link: http://www.stangmods.com/MRT-Hood-Struts-05-13-Mustangs-p/00109.htm

Installing StangMods’ Vinyl Lower Bumper Insert for 99-04

Mustang Vinyl Lower Rear Bumper Insert Installation

 Tools Required:

  • Squeeggee
  • Spray bottle
  • Liquid soap
  • Terry cloth or towel

First start off by making your soapy solution by combining three to four drops of dishwashing detergent with warm water

Next, you’ll want to thouroughly clean and prep the area for instalaltion. Use alcohol to clean any dirt or debris from the lower bumper area.

Once everything is nice and dry, you’ll now be ready for installation. Peel off the backing of the vinyl overlay. Be careful not to let it touch any surface other than the vehicle.

Spray the soapy solution over the entire lower bumper area.

Align the vinyl in place and use a squeegee to apply it to the vehicle.  Work from the center of the vinyl to the edges, slowly pushing any air bubbles and excess solution out from under the decal. It may take a few minutes until the vinyl begins to adhere to the vehicle.

Finish up by wiping off any excess solution from the body of your Stang.

Installing StangMods Bixenon HIDs in 05-09 Ford Mustangs

In this edition of writeups we go over the process of installing a Bixenon HID kit on a 2009 Mustang GT. This very popular modification was easy to install and required only a 10MM socket.

Tools Required:

  • 10MM Socket
  • Socket Extension

First take the wiring harness and position it on the passenger side near the fuse box cover. A majority of the connections will be made in this location.

Run the longer side of the harness over to the driver’s side of the vehicle. It is not important to tuck it away at this point.

Go back to the wires laid out on the passenger side. You’ll see two O ring terminals. You may have to push back the wire cover but you’ll see one is red and the other is black.

Using a 10MM socket, remove the bolt located on the inner fender. This is the location where you’ll connect the black ground wire with O ring terminal. Slip the O ring over the bolt as shown below and re-install the bolt.

Remove the cover on the fuse box located under the hood. There is a 10MM bolt circled in red below. Attach the red power wire with O ring terminal to this bolt. This is your power source.

The picture below shows our red O ring terminal power wire attached.

Next, you’ll want to remove the stock passenger side bulb. Simply turn the bulb counter-clockwise and it will come undone from the headlamp housing. Once you have the bulb removed, you’ll need to disconnect it from the stock harness. Use your thumb and press in the tab as shown below. While pressing the tab, gently pull the bulb away from the harness.

Take your new HID bulb and install it in the headlamp housing by turning it in clockwise.

Now, we’ll be connecting the H13 headlight plug from the HID harness to the stock passenger side harness as shown below. Simply plug the two connections in.

One of the last few steps for the passenger side is mounting your ballast. The picture below shows where we placed ours. There is more than enough space to drop in the ballast. Do not zip-tie it or bolt it in place just yet. The StangMods kit comes with both zip ties and brackets with hardware to mount your ballasts.

To finish up the installation on the passenger side, there are three plug-in connections that need to be made. Each of these connections are polarized; meaning they can only be plugged into each other one specific way. The first connection is from the bulb to the harness as shown below.

The next is the two separate plugs from the bulb to the ballast.

Finally, there is one remaining square plug from the HID harness. Connect it to the ballast as shown below.

Before buttoning everything up, check to make sure your passenger side HID bulb comes on and works.

After confirming the passenger side works, you can zip-tie all of the connections in place. Once everything is tucked away, it’ll be hard to notice the HID wiring.

Now we’ll begin on the driver side. We routed the harness over to the driver’s side following an OEM harness as pointed out in the picture below. Run the harness from HID underneath the radiator shroud cover.

To give us more space with the driver’s side headlamp area, remove the bolt holding the intake cover in place (use 10 MM socket and extension). You do not have to undo the intake completely. Simply remove the bolt and move the intake out of the way.

Remove the stock driver’s side bulb the same way you did the passenger side bulb. Undo the bulb from the harness and zip-tie the stock harness out of the way. It will not be used. You can now install the new HID bulb.

Now place the ballast in the location as shown below. There is just enough space for the ballast to fit in snugly. You can zip tie it to the large harness to keep it in place.

Next you’ll connect the driver’s side ground to the bolt on the inner fenderwell as shown below.

Finish up the process by making the same three plug-in connections that you made on the passenger side. Reinstall the stock intake and zip-tie any loose connections out of the way. This completes the full installation of your new HID kit.

Replacing Your 05-09 Mustang’s Rear License Plate Bulb

In this writeup we go over the installation of a license plate bulb on any 2005-2009 Ford Mustang. StangMods carries not only standard halogen replacement bulbs but also high output LED bulbs in HID white and blue. You can find our selection of exterior bulbs here – http://www.stangmods.com/Mustang-Exterior-Bulbs-from-StangMods-com-s/106.htm

The only tool required for this install is a flat head screwdriver. This tool will be used to remove the fasteners holding the license plate bulb cover in place. First locate the two push pins holding the bulb cover in place. Using your flat head screwdriver, gently pull them out as shown below.

Once the pins are removed, grasp the cover as shown below and gently pull down. Do not use much force as the cover will be held to the vehicle with a wiring harness.

The stock bulb is attached to the grey harness. Give it a half turn counter-clockwise to release the harness and bulb from the cover.

To complete the installation, remove the stock bulb and re-install the new LED into the harness and then back into the cover. Finish up by re-attaching the two push pins you removed in step 1. Thats all there is to it. This rather simple mod really livens up an otherwise overlooked area of your ride!

You can purchase your LED license plate bulbs and replacement bulbs from StangMods.com

Installing Webelectric’s 05′-09′ Mustang Plug-In Sequential Turn Signals

In this writeup we will go over the installation process of our very popular 2005-2009 Mustang Plug in Sequntial kit. Installation is very simple and requires only a couple of basic tools.

Tools Required:

  • 7/16″ Deep Socket
  • Flat head screw driver

First you’ll want to remove the black trim panel from inside the trunk area. Start by removing the twist off screw and push pin as circled below. Use the flat head screw driver to gently pry out the push pin. Repeat on the other side of the vehicle.

Next use your flat head screw driver and remove the two push pins as shown below. Again, gently pry out the pins to avoid any damage.

Take your 7/16 deep socket and remove the three nuts located on the inside of the trunk as shown below. These nuts hold the tail lamp onto the vehicle.

Once you’ve removed all three nuts, you are ready to remove the tail lamp and harness from the vehicle. Depress the tab on the grey harness plug and separate the connectors.

Now, gently pull the tail lamp away from the body of the vehicle and work the harness grommet out of its location using the flat head screwdriver as shown below. Once its free, pull the entire tail lamp and harness completely out.

With the tail lamp out from the vehicle, place it on a flat work bench and begin removing the light sockets by turning them counter-clockwise. You must also remove the socket for the reverse lamp. Finally, the harness is attached to the tail lamp with a white push pin. Remove it gently and free the harness from the tail light.

At this point we are almost done with the first side. Pull the bulbs out of the OEM harness and plug them back into the sequential harness. Before you re-install the new sequential harness, it is important to note the correct position. Each socket is pre-labeled with the numbers 1,2,3. Socket 1 should be installed in the inner most lens, socket 2 in the middle lens, and socket 3 on the outermost lens.

The orientation for the driver’s side tail lamp is shown below:

The orientation for the passenger side tail lamp is shown below:

The new sequential harness contains the white push pin. Remember to place it back in to secure the harness to the tail lamp.

To finish up the installation, re-route the harness with the grey connector through the body of the vehicle and plug it back in. Then, secure the black grommet and re-install the tail lamp. Re-attach the (3) bolts holding the tail lamp to the vehicle. Once you have completed the installation on the opposite side, place the black trim piece in place and re-attach the plastic push pins to complete your installation.

Now you can dazzle everyone when you flick your signals on with this unique product from StangMods.com
